Description | The DirectDraw Surface (.dds) file format is used for storing textures and cubic environment maps, both compressed and uncompressed. This makes the format useful for storing DXTn compressed data used in GPUs and consoles like the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. | JPEG 2000 is a wavelet-based image compression standard. The aim of JPEG 2000 is not only improved compression performance over JPEG but also adding (or improving) features such as scalability and editability. |
Benefits | much smaller file size at equal quality than JPEG | |
Drawbacks | less popular, requires more computational resources |
