Company | PENTAX |
Description | Founded in 1919 as Asahi Kgaku Kgy G.K., Pentax was formerly a company well known for its lenses. It made its first camera in 1952, the Asahiflex. It was Japan's first 35mm SLR. A variant of this model is equipped with an instant-return mirror that solved the problem of mirror blackout that was common issue with SLR at that time. The name Pentax came from the model name of Asahiflex's successor released in 1957. The name was derived from Pentaprism, the shape of the prism used in SLRs. Asahi Optical Co. was officially named this in 2002. The company released its first DSLR the following year. The company was later renamed to Ricoh Imaging following the purchased by Ricoh. While their compact line of cameras sport this new name, their DSLRs retain the brand Pentax. http://www.ricoh-imaging.com |
