One Nikon D60 RAW file converted to five formats, at quality 90 where the format has a quality setting. PNG is lossless, so it is the largest. Seconds are the median of three runs. Measured with the Contenta Converter 9.0.35 command line on an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, 2026-09-30.

Contenta Converter only converts PostScript files that carry an embedded preview image (the binary EPS-style header) to JPG, PNG or TIFF. For plain PostScript, use the free Ghostscript to render it to PNG or PDF.

Description PostScript is Adobe's page description language from 1984. A .ps file is the raw PostScript source — a program that, when sent to a PostScript-capable printer or interpreter like Ghostscript, draws the page. Think of it as PDF's grandfather: same idea, text format, no compression, everything rendered at print time.
Benefits Device-independent by design: the same .ps file prints identically on a 300 dpi laser from 1990 and a 2400 dpi imagesetter today. Text-based, so you can edit or inspect the file with any text editor. Perfectly suited for high-quality print output where vector accuracy matters.
Drawbacks Superseded by PDF in 1993. Modern workflows have no reason to use PS — PDF is smaller, faster to render, self-contained, and supports the same vector accuracy. Rendering a PS file requires a PostScript interpreter (Ghostscript, or a PostScript printer), which makes viewing inconvenient. Most modern apps and browsers can't open .ps directly.

Frequently Asked Questions about PS

Why won't my PS file convert?

Most .ps files are plain PostScript with no embedded preview, and Contenta Converter does not interpret PostScript. Render it with the free Ghostscript (to PNG or PDF), or print it to PDF from the program that made it.
