THM file: what it is and how to open it
A .thm file is a thumbnail your camera saves next to each video (Canon, GoPro, Sony and others) so its playback menu can show a preview. Most THM files are ordinary JPEG images of 160×120 to 640×480 pixels: rename one to .jpg and Windows Photos opens it. It is only a preview; the footage stays in the video file.
How to open a .THM file on Windows
- Rename it to .jpg (free). In File Explorer, change the extension from .thm to .jpg and double-click. Works for most cameras, because the file already is a JPEG.
- Rename a whole folder (free). Copy the folder first, then run

Can I just rename a .thm file to .jpg?
Yes, for most cameras. THM files from Canon, GoPro, Sony and many other brands are JPEG images with a different extension, so renaming them to .jpg is enough. If a renamed file will not open, that camera stored its preview in another format.
Is a THM file the video itself?
No. It is only a small preview picture. The footage is in the video file with the same name, for example MVI_0001.MOV next to MVI_0001.THM. Deleting the THM does not delete the video.
