What Is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPEG at similar quality — but most Windows programs, websites, and printers cannot open HEIC files. Converting to JPEG makes your photos universally compatible.

Do you even need an app for this?

Why not just use Windows built-in?

Windows 11 can open HEIC — after you install Microsoft's HEIF Image Extension ($0.99). You then get one-at-a-time “Save As JPEG” in the Photos app. If you have more than 10 photos, this is where your afternoon goes.

Why not just change the iPhone setting?

If you turn on “Most Compatible” in iOS Settings → Camera → Formats, new photos save as JPEG. Existing HEIC photos stay HEIC forever. Useful going forward, useless for the 8 years of vacation photos already on your phone.

Why not online converters?

They work for 5 photos. They fall over at 500. And every photo crosses someone else's server — not what you want for a private photo library.

HEIC questions, straight answers

Will the GPS location of my iPhone photos be preserved?

Yes, unless you tell it not to. EXIF, GPS, orientation, and color profile all carry through by default. There's also a “Strip All Metadata” option if you want the opposite.

Does “Most Compatible” mode on iPhone fix this without an app?

Only for photos taken after you flip the setting. Everything already in your library stays HEIC. That's what batch conversion is for.

What JPEG quality should I pick?

92. Files are about half the size of quality 100 and visually identical except under a magnifier. Drop to 85 for email and web, stay at 92 for archival.
