Why other programs say the DNG is not supported
Since the iPhone 16 Pro, ProRAW can be saved as JPEG XL Lossless or JPEG XL Lossy. The file is still called .dng, but inside it is DNG 1.7 with JPEG XL image data. Programs built for older DNG versions stop there. In darktable, support for these files was still an open request in September 2026, and Lightroom 6 received its last update years before the format existed.

What we tested, with real files
On 21 September 2026 we converted photos straight from these phones to JPG and checked that each JPG has the full resolution. The table also lists what we have not been able to test.

Brightness checked again on 24 September 2026 with iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra files: colours and brightness match the phone, and portrait shots come out upright. The phone saves its brightness information inside the DNG, and Contenta Converter applies it.

Questions about phone RAW files
Pro iPhones from the iPhone 16 Pro on can save ProRAW with JPEG XL compression. That makes the file a DNG 1.7, and programs written for older DNG versions cannot decode the image data. The file is not damaged. Contenta Converter decodes JPEG XL DNG files itself.

All converted at full size. Not tested yet: iPhone 17 Pro JPEG XL Lossy straight from the phone, the iPhone 18 Pro, and Expert RAW from the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Yes, in colour and in brightness. The phone saves its brightness information inside the DNG, and Contenta Converter applies it together with the camera white balance. In our tests on 24 September 2026 with iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra files, the brightness of each JPG came within 10 percent of the phone's own version, and portrait shots came out upright. Edits you made in the Photos or Gallery app on the phone are not part of the RAW file, so they are not applied.
